Ecolab Inc., St. Paul, MN, recently joined two other companies, Microsoft and PepsiCo, in earning a grade of “A” for “net zero” greenhouse gas emissions, according to a news release.

The grade was part of an assessment from the pro-environmental shareholder group, As You Sow. A newly published report from As You Sow titled, Road to Zero Emissions: 55 Companies Ranked on Net Zero progress, rated companies based on their progress (or lack of it) in meeting the 1.5-degree goal of the Paris agreement on climate change.

“The report finds a significant number of companies are making progress in measuring and disclosing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and many are setting GHG-reduction targets,” the report said. “But the vast majority are not making progress in aligning year-on-year emissions reductions with global 1.5-degree climate goals.” The report added that “of the 55 companies ranked – only three – Microsoft, PepsiCo and Ecolab – received an overall ‘A’ grade, and only two companies, Alphabet and Apple, received an overall ‘B’ grade.” The remaining 84% of the companies assessed received a grade of “D” or “F,” according to David Shugar, the lead report analyst and climate initiative manager for As You Sow.
