Breaking Down the Walls that Isolate: Strategies for Emerging Leaders of Family-Owned Companies

High expectations, family dynamics, a limited social network, and a lack of support can lead to feelings of pressure and isolation for emerging leaders of family-owned businesses. It is essential for next generation leaders to seek out support and guidance to overcome these challenges to succeed in their role. Presented by Nicole Bettinger Zeidler, a speaker and consultant with The Family Business Consulting Group, this half-day workshop is designed to help emerging leaders of family-owned companies overcome the feeling of isolation they may experience when taking over the family business.

Through an interactive session and case study, participants will gain practical strategies for building their own personal support network and brand, helping them to manage family dynamics, and navigate the challenges of leadership. Topics covered in the session include:

  • The Challenges of Leadership in a Family-Owned Company (pressure to succeed, family dynamics, and the difficulty separating family and business)
  • Building a Support Network (identifying mentors, joining industry associations, connecting with others, and using other resources for support and guidance)
  • Managing Family Dynamics (setting boundaries, communicating, and conflict resolution
  • Navigating the Challenges of Leadership (managing succession planning, fostering a culture of innovation, and balancing short- and long-term goals).

Participants will break out into groups for an engaging and entertaining case study analyzing an actual (though anonymous) family-owned company, exploring the challenges faced by the emerging leader and the strategies for overcoming them.
