On Thursday, March 13, TRSA held a webinar focusing on the key components of an effective fleet safety program. Ensuring driver safety goes beyond discipline and learning from accidents; it involves reinforcing exemplary performance and rewarding drivers for their adherence to best practices. Fleet management prioritizes getting drivers home safely to their families and emphasizes the importance of their safety to the company’s success.
The hour-long webinar was hosted by Alexander Greenman, director of fleet at ImageFIRST. Greenman began with a strong message about the importance of embracing a safety culture within organizations. Safety should be a core value, preached and practiced daily by everyone, from top executives to fleet drivers. The goal is to ensure that safety is not just a policy but a way of life.
With that in mind, compliance is crucial for fleet safety. This includes ensuring that all drivers have the necessary qualifications, such as valid driver’s licenses and medical cards. Regular motor vehicle checks and maintaining detailed driver qualification files (DQ files) are essential. Companies should also keep records of all training sessions to ensure ongoing compliance and readiness. Proper onboarding and continuous training are vital. New drivers should be thoroughly trained in safety protocols, vehicle inspections and the use of safety equipment. Regular refresher courses for all drivers, regardless of their level of experience, helps to reinforce safe driving habits and keep everyone updated on the latest safety practices.
In the event of an accident, having a clear post-accident protocol is essential. Drivers should first ensure their own safety and then check on others involved. Immediate steps include contacting emergency services, documenting the incident with photos and videos, and notifying the company. A thorough investigation should follow to understand the cause of the incident and prevent future occurrences.
Greenman concluded his presentation with a call for continuous improvement. Fleet safety programs should evolve with new technologies, regulations and best practices. Engaging with trusted resources, such as the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), can provide valuable guidance and support. He also spoke on fun training activities such as a “Fleet Rodeo,” which is an exercise that involves having drivers maneuver through safety cones as a continuous training strategy.
